If you enjoy the outdoors and want to experience natural and undisturbed Florida, I encourage you to visit some of the 66 conservation areas encompassing 709,000 acres in north and central Florida managed by the St. Johns River Water Management District and its many partners.
The best place to start is with the District’s online recreation guide, where you’ll find information about each property, complete with pictures and maps.
While there is no cost to visit properties managed by the District, some properties managed by our partner agencies may have small entrance fees. There are a variety of activities allowed on each property, and the recreation guide is a good source for what’s allowed.
The one warning that I’ll provide (aside from encouraging you to make sure you’re always safe out there), is that District lands do not have the amenities that you’ll typically find at state and national parks. Only some properties have restrooms and camping is very primitive (of the 62 campsites, reservations can be made for 27 of them). We try to leave as much of the land in its natural state as possible.
Enjoy your land!
