Video shows wildlife abounds at Emeralda Marsh in Lake County

Monday, March 28, 2011

Robert Coufal finds the Emeralda Marsh along Lake Griffin in Lake County so awe-inspiring that he made the video below of the wildlife that now call the area home.

Coufal, who is the assistant general manager at the Hampton Inn of Leesburg/Tavares, summed it up this way: “We here at the Hampton Inn and our visiting guests to the area would like to thank you for your important and hard work at Emeralda Marsh. Which is why we made this video! I personally have seen the transformation over the last 10 years and the progress is remarkable. We love it, our guests love it, and as you will see in this video the plant and animal life certainly do.”

The video shows some spectacular images and is definitely worth watching.

The St. Johns River Water Management District in the early 1990s brought more than 6,500 acres of muck farms along the northeastern shore of Lake Griffin into public ownership. By purchasing the farms, nutrient discharges into Lake Griffin were substantially decreased.

The former farming areas, which are now collectively known as the Emeralda Marsh Conservation Area, are providing: new recreational opportunities for the public, including wildlife viewing, hiking and hunting; wildlife habitat, with the area becoming home to numerous wading birds and waterfowl; and opportunities to improve Lake Griffin’s water quality through the re-creation of natural wetlands on land acquired along the northeastern shore of Lake Griffin.

You can experience the area for yourself, and our Recreation Guide to District Lands is a good first step in finding your way out there.
