Interactive survey shows where you use water

Friday, February 11, 2011

With the increased focus in recent years on water conservation, hopefully you’re thinking about ways that you can conserve water in and around your home.

If you’re new to water conservation, which not only benefits our environment but can also save you money, you may want to start with your water bill (if you receive one) to get an idea of just how much water your household consumes.

To drill in a little deeper to better understand where the bulk of your water goes, and where you may be able to reduce consumption, complete the District’s interactive home water use survey online. The survey is an enjoyable and simple way to understand your usage, and it even generates a report for your personal use.

The water conservation section of our website also has a lot of resources that provide water conservation and landscaping tips. The section also includes details about the mandatory watering restrictions, which currently allow watering up to one designated day per week.

Thank you, Richard! It can, indeed, be quite enlightening to see exactly where the bulk of your water goes.

Landscaping can really affect water supply. This post can give awareness to people on how important that they should plan their landscape and house structure very well.

That is one of the most innovative and interactive features I've seen on a site like this ever! Very well done! As a professional landscaper for 15 years, I was surprised to find that I actually agreed with all of your comments about the different sections of the landscape. All very good.

I would add three things that I didn't see on that page. 1) We've gone way beyond simple rain shut-off devices. Now, companies like Rain Bird make very affordable SMART controllers that monitor the weather daily (measuring exact rainfall, high and low temperature, solar radiation, wind speed, and relative humidity) and then adjust your watering schedule - by zone - to only water as needed, based on these weather conditions. Very smart technology and costs only a couple hundred dollars. Pays for itself in a year or less, typically. 2) Don't overdo it on the mulch. You'll kill plants and trees if you put too much. 3) Consider using drip instead of spray for plant beds.
