Why were weekend watering days selected?

Monday, April 26, 2010

As we all adjust to the spring/summer watering schedule of no more than two days a week, one of the questions we hear is why weekend days were chosen as watering days when that’s when many people do yard work.

There actually was significant thought and discussion put into the designated days. While weekday watering would be more convenient for those with automatic in-ground irrigation systems, about 50 percent of the homes in northeast and central Florida don’t have in-ground systems. Those who drag hoses and sprinklers around their yards need some weekend time for irrigation. That’s why those with addresses ending in an odd number can water on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and those with addresses ending in an even number can water on Thursdays and Sundays. Non-residential irrigation can occur on Tuesdays and Fridays.

If your watering day is Saturday and you want to work in your yard on Saturday morning, try watering Saturday evening after you complete your yard work. It’s also good to remember that just because you can water on a certain day doesn’t mean that you have to water. Watch for signs of stress before deciding to water.

The designated days you can water and all of the other watering rules and exceptions can be found on our landscape irrigation Web pages.
